Longevity.Technology debuts strength-focused supplement

We sat down with Dr Andy Franklyn-Miller, Chief Medical and Innovation Officer of Nuritas to find out more about PeptiStrong, MUSCLE’s hero ingredient.

The pep in peptides

Peptides are just proteins, really small short chains of amino acids. Unlike amino acids, which we eat as fuel, PeptiStrong is a network, a combination of peptides that we’ve identified and discovered and tested through artificial intelligence. Nuritas, over the last 10 years, has built a unique database of over 9 million peptides that come from plants. We find the peptides in plants – so they’re food grade – and then we check their action, their focus, and within PeptiStrong, unlike most other ingredients, there are five unique mechanisms of action, and that’s what gives that power, that specificity within that small dose of the ingredient.

With PeptiStrong, we wanted to find an ingredient that was unique within muscle health. We wanted something that would increase protein synthesis, to help us build muscle, and we wanted to find an ingredient which would slow down the breakdown of muscle. We know that people after we reach the age of 30, every five years or so, we start to lose muscle – and muscle is so important for longevity. In the British Journal of Sports Medicine, a meta-analysis showed that up to 21% shift in all-cause mortality just from muscle alone – and that’s why it was so important. Alongside that prevention breakdown, we wanted to look at anti-inflammation, we wanted to look at ATP production, but also the upregulation of bone mineral content – we wanted something that would cover all of those.

A touch of magic

Now, trying to find that peptide by chance would have taken us 100 million years – the chances of finding a combination of peptides that would fit all of those criteria would be virtually impossible. And that’s where AI comes in; over the last 10 years, we built this unique database where we’d digested enzymatically multiple different plant sources, identified peptides, and then match them with biological receptor activity. It doesn’t just get there by magic, but it’s totally unique. That database is rather like something out of Harry Potter in that respect – like the Sorting Hat gives the best fit, it gives us the peptides that will deliver the best activity.

In a clinical trial which compared PeptiStrong with milk protein on simulated muscle loss, we found that after about two weeks, the milk protein group had recovered about 60% of their strength, whereas the PeptiStrong group had recovered over 100%, so 103 % of that strength. When we took a biopsy of the muscle of the volunteers, what we saw was that the PeptiStrong group had four times the protein synthesis of that of milk protein. And it wasn’t a case of just feeding more protein – it was a case of being able to drive the pathway. That’s really interesting because in terms of maintaining muscle, as we age, we might have a more varied diet, we might eat less, but we still want to keep hold of what we have; and that’s where PeptiStrong really comes in – holding on to what we have as well as increasing new muscle synthesis. And that’s all within that one ingredient.

Strong in science

In other clinical trials focused on strength gain and muscle recovery we found that after inducing muscle damage, the subjects on PeptiStrong became stronger 72 hours after that damaging protocol than they were at baseline – the PeptiStrong group increased that muscle strength and had a longer time before fatigue. Muscular energy and fatigue are really important concepts – how much you can lift in rep one versus how much you can lift at the end of your set, the ability to go and do that extra Peloton class, to run up the flight of stairs, to get out and do the shopping, to do what you want to do, to get to the gym. PeptiStrong is all about muscular energy, – it has the ability to upregulate that ATP production so you get more out of your workout and more out of recovery so that you’re ready to go again.
