Eyenuk has secured deployment of its EyeArt® AI Eye Screening System within Norway’s South-Eastern Regional Health Authority, marking the first national health system adoption of autonomous AI for eye disease detection, the company said. The initiative, facilitated by Human Bytes, aims to increase retinal screening coverage for people with diabetes from 55 percent to over 95 percent.
The South-Eastern Norway Regional Health Authority covers 3.1 million people, including Oslo, and intends to use the AI system to address ophthalmologist shortages and improve access to timely diabetic eye screenings, according to the company. Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of vision loss among working-age adults, and Norway currently faces gaps in follow-up care.
The EyeArt system enables automated grading of retinal images in under 30 seconds without requiring an ophthalmologist’s review. Screening results will integrate directly into Norway’s DIPS Arena electronic medical record system. EyeArt version 3.0 holds a Class IIb MDR CE marking for diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and glaucomatous optic nerve damage, and is FDA-cleared in the U.S. for diabetic retinopathy, the company said.
The deployment follows a competitive procurement managed by Sykehusinnkjøp HF, which oversees purchases for Norway’s four regional health authorities. The other three regions retain the option to implement EyeArt in the future. According to the company, the system could help reduce Norway’s annual disease burden by approximately NOK 250 million by expanding screening coverage.
