According to a recent article on Business Insider, Caitlin Donato, a certified personal trainer and fitness director at the Pritikin Longevity Center in Miami, recommends focusing on three key fitness markers that can significantly impact longevity: VO2 max, muscle mass and balance [1].

1. VO2 max

VO2 max or maximal oxygen uptake, measures how well your body uses oxygen during intense exercise. It’s a strong indicator of cardiovascular fitness and overall health.

It naturally decreases as you age, but regular aerobic exercise can help maintain and even improve it. Donato emphasizes that maintaining a good VO2 max level is linked to lower risks of heart disease, diabetes and overall mortality [2].

2. Muscle mass

Muscle mass plays a crucial role in longevity beyond strength and physical appearance. More muscle mass is associated with better metabolic health, reduced risk of insulin resistance and improved bone density [3].
