Frequent hangovers? Vigorous exercise may reduce symptoms, study shows


A study published in Addiction Biology explored the relationship between vigorous physical activity and hangover severity.

Researchers examined data from individuals who frequently consumed alcohol. Participants self-reported their alcohol intake, hangover frequency and exercise habits, including vigorous activities like running and high-intensity workouts.

The study found that those who exercised regularly reported fewer and less intense hangover symptoms [1]. Vigorous physical activity appeared to help alleviate common hangover issues such as headaches and nausea.

The researchers suggest that exercise’s potential benefits on metabolism and circulation may contribute to faster recovery from alcohol’s effects [2].

However, the study emphasizes that exercise is not a guaranteed hangover cure. Individuals need to drink responsibly and not rely on physical activity alone to reduce the effects of heavy drinking.

Additionally, the researchers highlight that individual differences such as age, gender and overall health may influence how exercise impacts hangover symptoms.

The study concludes that while vigorous exercise may reduce the severity of hangovers, more research is needed to understand the underlying mechanisms better and confirm these findings across larger populations.
